Recognized as the founding father of modern jazz piano, Monk's music was like a set of Russian babushka dolls: inside one you found another. His playing was fanciful, whimsical and wizardly: the contours of his creations like "Round Midnight" and "Straight No Chaser" were confounding in their complexity and simplicity.
